Cellulite is a skin condition in which the normal fat that lies beneath the skin appears dimpled and bumpy. The reason it has this unique look is that the subcutaneous fat pushes against the connective tissue resulting in puckering. You may have heard it referred to as “orange peel skin” or “cottage cheese skin” due to the dimpled effect. Cellulite is often seen on the legs and butt area and is more prevalent in women than in men.

What Causes Cellulite?

There are many factors that can influence how much cellulite you have and how visible it is including…

  • Hormones: Estrogen plays a large role in cellulite and if you have a high amount of estrogen, your cellulite may be more prevalent.
  • Lack of physical activity: If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, the muscles in your body decrease in size making cellulite more visible.
  • Genetics: Unfortunately, if your close family members have cellulite, you may be predisposed to developing it yourself. This is why even thin people can have cellulite.
  • Slow metabolism: As your metabolism slows with age, the body begins to store more and more fat, resulting in an increase in cellulite.

Dry Brushing Cellulite

As you can see from the list above, one of the factors that contributes to the appearance of cellulite is lack of physical activity. If you increase your amount of exercise and add in weight training you may see a reduction in the amount of cellulite you have. But what if your cellulite is hereditary and no amount of exercising is going to change that? This is where dry brushing comes in. Dry brushing can help reduce the amount of cellulite you have by massaging the connective tissue that is causing the dimpling. Dry brushing cellulite also helps to remove toxins, improve circulation, and stimulate the skin so nutrients and oxygen are brought to the outer layer of the skin which all results in a decreased appearance of cellulite! After dry brushing, apply or any moisturizing oil to make sure your skin stays soft and supple.
