If you missed it, I told you guys all about the first part of our DC trip . On the third day of our trip we got to hang around the house for most of the day. I was pretty stoked about that and was really looking to chilling by the pool–I’m definitely a “beach bum” kind of girl. We road a tiny train at a nearby park, Eli hit the pool in style, and we topped the night off with a beautiful night of baseball.
We went to see the Nationals play the Pirates and I may have eaten a little bit too much cotton candy. I almost went with the $6 funnel cake, but am happy with my decision to stick with the $3 cotton candy–Man, am I frugal or what? The weather really couldn’t have been more perfect and we had really great seats. Jacob and his family spent vacations in big cities and going to the MLB stadiums was a peak part of their trips. He collects the special baseballs from each stadium, so we snagged him a pretty cool one from the Nats stadium. I was really excited to experience my first MLB game with him and it was the great topper to a relaxing day.
The next day, we hit the city hard again. We started out at Arlington National Cemetery and made it over to watch the Changing of the Guard, visit JFK’s gravesite, and just take in the overwhelming amount of headstones marking men and women that paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It was such an amazing exp erience and it really made me appreciate being an American even more. After Arlington, we headed a little closer to downtown and found parking near the White House. It was about lunchtime by then, so we stopped at the largest amount of food trucks I have ever seen in one place. Jacob’s family are very germ-conscious, but were good sports and picked a truck to eat from. I got a philly cheesesteak and it was seriously delicious. If someone would’ve handed it to me and told me it was made in a tiny little truck, I wouldn’t have believed them…..yum. After the deliciousness, we headed over to the White House. I was really excited to see it and even got a picture of a futurepresident while we were there….Navey for President!
We continued our journey across the city and headed for the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The Monument is surrounded in scaffolding right now because of an earthquake a few years ago, but I really enjoyed the Lincoln Memorial. Jacob kept telling me, “Just wait, he’s so big,” but I didn’t quite get it until we saw it up close. That thing is huge. It was crazy standing next to it! It’s also crazy that it was vandalized late that night, so I’m really glad we went when we did!
On our last day, we spent the entire day by the pool again. Eli was absolutely pooped from the day before and ended up taking a 4 hour nap–crazy boy! I think he was trying to make up for waking me up at the crack of dawn every day. Lucky for him, I don’t mind trading a few hours of sleep for a few by the pool. If you haven’t gathered, I absolutely loved our trip! We owe a huge thanks to Jacob’s parents for planning everything and making the week one full of long lasting memories. We enjoyed all of the sight seeing and it was a true blessing to spend time with such amazing people all week! I hated coming home!
