Intense pulsed light (IPL)
–From Wikipedia
Intense pulsed light, commonly abbreviated as IPL, is a technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic uses includingand treatment of dermatologic diseases. The technology utilizes a broad spectrum lightsource, with a general spectral range of 500 to 1200 nm. Various cutoff filters are commonly used to filter out lower frequencies and narrow this spectrum to target specific structures and chromophores. Because of the broad spectrum of the IPL light source they are unique, as opposed to lasers, in the ability to filter the light spectrum to target various in the skin.
Intense pulsed light is the use of intense of non- over a range of from 500 nm to 1200 nm. Xenon flashlamps produce high output bursts of broad spectrum. Cooling is used to protect the skin in contact with the device.- wikipedia
Intense pulsed light technologies have evolved significantly since their introduction to the medical community 20 years ago. Now such devices can be used safely and effectively for the cosmetic treatment of many vascular lesions, unwanted hair, and pigmented lesions. Newer technologies often give results equal to those of laser treatments.

Intense Pulsed Light is used for the improvement of skin tone and colour and surface imperfections associated with aging and sun damage. Broken capillaries and general redness may also be treated. It is also useful in the treatment of rosacea. Different programmes allow targeting of different problems and a specific attachment is used for hair removal treatments.
A cold gel is initially applied. Limelight is fitted with a cooled window in contact with the skin allowing some pain relief. Patients may experience a mild stinging sensation as a pulse of light is delivered through the cold glass window. Repeated treatments may cause some tissue remodelling over time. The large treatment window of 10 x 30 mm allows treatment of large areas of skin relatively quickly.
After treatment, your skin may be red for a few hours. Brown spots will start to darken (like chocolate Milo) and after one to two weeks these spots will flake off in tiny scales and fade. Treatment time is less than one hour and two to five treatments are usually required at four week intervals.
Choice Magazine:
Lasers and IPL (intense pulsed light) devices, (which are not technically lasers but work on a similar principal), can be used for hair reduction and skin treatments such as removing spider veins, improving skin tone and to remove tattoos.
All the experts CHOICE spoke to agree that laser or IPL treatment, in the hands of an experienced and trained operator can be very effective. Melbourne dermatologist Dr Philip Bekhor says its the best way to remove unwanted hair, as long as you are a “suitable candidate”.
