Summering with Scott Gerber—on Whitefish Lake in Montana
With the looming of Labor Day Weekend, Quest takes a look at the summers of New Yorkers-in-the-know. Here, an interview with , C.E.O. of New York–based , who chooses to vacation in a cabin on Whitefish Lake in Montana—40 minutes from Glacier National Park.
Why do you head to Whitefish Lake?
Summer is beautiful as Glacier Park is nearby for hiking. Our home is right on the lake, so we do a lot of boating and wake-surfing. We mountain bike on the mountain where there is an abundance of beautiful bike trails. The sun doesn’t set until past 10 p.m., so the days are very long! There is also great skiing at Whitefish Mountain in the winter, as well as snow mobiling and cross-country skiing.
How many years have you been vacationing in Montana?
We first went to a dude ranch about 16 years ago. It was called Flathead Lake Lodge. My brother-in-law relocated to Whitefish and then we bought our first cabin 14 years ago.
What are the spots to hit?
Mostly to friends houses for dinners. has great food, specializing in market-fresh vegetables paired with freshly caught fish and a great steak frites. My friend Pat Carlos owns a couple of restaurants in town, but we especially like pub and grill. It’s a minute from our house, so we can go in our bathing suits and T-shirts right from the boat.
What’s so special about Whitefish Lake?
The people are unpretentious, and Glacier National Park is one of the most spectacular places on earth.
