Lots of women suffer from it. Fat people, thin people, short people, tall people. Yup. Cellulite does not discriminate. Being ‘skinny’ doesn’t mean you get to sit out when the body gods dole out the cellulite either. Okay, so we all hate cellulite and I’m guessing that you may have even bought a cellulite cream at one point in your life, only to discover that it does diddly squat. Me too, many years ago. So today, I’m debunking some myths about the dreaded cottage cheese/orange peel look and giving you the cold hard facts on how to reduce or improve your problem areas. Because we all want a sexy tushy right?

What is cellulite?

Cellulite (also known as adiposis edematosa) is a condition where the skin appears lumpy and to have areas with underlying fat deposits, giving it a dimpled, ‘orange-peel’ appearance. The most common place for cellulite to deposit is on the buttocks and thighs.

What causes cellulite?

The causes of cellulite are not particularly well understood, but according to medicalnewstoday.com, there are several theories as to what the causes are;

Hormonal factors – hormones play an important role in cellulite development. Many believe oestrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process. Genetics – certain genes are required for cellulite development. Genes may predispose an individual to particular characteristics associated with cellulite, such as gender, race, slow metabolism, distribution of fat just underneath the skin, and circulatory insufficiency. Diet – people who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, or salt and too little fiber are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite. Lifestyle factors – cellulite may be more prevalent in smokers, those who do not exercise, and those who sit or stand in one position for long periods of time. Clothing – underwear with tight elastic across the buttocks (limiting blood flow) may contribute to the formation of cellulite.

As I have adjusted my diet over the last 8 years to compliment my healing journey, my body has changed A LOT. I’ve been a size 6, 8, 10 and possibly at one point in my late teens, I might have been verging on a 12. I have eaten different foods at different parts of my journey but here are some nuggets of wisdom from what I know and have experienced.

1. When you eat clean, fill your body with nutrition and exercise, you reach your perfect and ideal weight.

2. When you do this, your mental clarity, creativity, positivity, energy, feelings of wellbeing and outlook dramatically IMPROVE.

3. When you stop dieting and just eat and live WELL, life becomes simpler, your energetic vibration is raised and life flows effortlessly.

SECRET NO 1 – GET ON THE HEALTHY HIGHWAY / GO CLEAN, GO GREEN

Yes, I know these are bald claims but these are just a few of the many benefits of eating clean and green and dumping the junk. That doesn’t mean you have to ONLY eat raw food because you don’t. Eat alkaline WHOLE foods. You know, I’m talking veggies, grains, leafy greens, nuts and seeds. Cook them if you like but stick to food that was grown as naturally and organically as possible.

6 Things to AVOID that exacerbate cellulite

  • Smoking
  • Caffeine
  • Processed foods
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Alcohol

Okay, so we have the foods thing down. What next?

SECRET NO 2 – PUMP UP YOUR LYMPHS

The lymphatic system is a system of thin tubes that runs throughout the body and picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to the blood; disposes of debris in the lymphatic stream; and houses white blood cells involved in immunity. It does not have its own pump to push the fluid around your body so in order to help it remove the unwanted debris, we can help by body brushing.

What is body brushing?

This practice increases circulation to the skin and greatly aids lymphatic drainage of the entire body. All you need is a long-handled body brush with natural bristles or it can be done with a loofah. It should be carried out on dry skin and I recommend you do it daily first thing in the morning to jump start your circulation. It’s also preferable to do it prior to your shower or bath so that the dead skin cells are washed away. The technique is simple. Begin brushing your bare skin in long sweeping strokes from your feet upwards, brushing the legs, buttocks then onto the stomach and chest. Brush from the hands towards the shoulders and from the waist up your back, brushing several times in each area, over-lapping as you go. Always brush towards the heart and avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken. Brushing your body in this way every day is a very simple and effective way of encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic waste and excess fluid, thus supporting yourother eliminative organs such as the kidneys and liver as well as improving your skin tone. It will also help to remove any excess fluid that may be contributing to your cellulite. 3 Herbs to Help Fight Cellulite Parsley – Also known as Petroselinum helps to prevent the body from developing cellulite as it is a fantastic detoxifying agent and diuretic, helping to rid the body of extra water and toxins. It also protects the liver and aids in decreasing blood glucose levels. Add to juices, smoothies or make herbal tea with it. Dandelion – Aids in ridding the liver of waste products, allowing it to function effectively once toxins are flushed out. Dandelion also includes potassium in elevated quantities, which assists in combating the preservation of fluids. Juice dandelion leaves, add to salads or make herbal tea. Fenugreek – Fenugreek is utilised on the inside for weight loss and on the outside for cellulite. Add the flowers to salads or juice.   Have you tried dry skin brushing? Do youlike how it gives you a buzzy zingy feeling? Me too. What have you found effective for treating cellulite?
