Top 5 Lasers for Hair Removal This blog is dedicated to 5 top hair removal lasers The following are 5 top picks for lasers that  have remained as top sellers and in demand for performing hair removal. The lasers where chosen based on the following criteria. Treatment outcome Patient satisfaction Reliability Easy of use Cost effective to operate (as far as lasers go). Candela GentleLase Mini             Candela introduced the GentleLase in approximately 1998. The system was very good right off the bat. The DCD (dynamic cooling device) made the procedure comfortable for the patient, the 755nm Alexandrite wavelength worked great on skin types 1-3, the 15mm spot size was very large for the time and the system was reliable. The GentleLase Plus was the next generation. the biggest improvement was a larger 18mm spot size and an optional 3x10mm hand piece could be purchased. The GentleLase and GentleLase Plus looked pretty much the same. Different colors and the “Plus” lettering on the frontpanel helped to tell the two apart. In approximately 2003 – 2004 Candela introduced the GentleLase Mini. Mini for a reason. It was smaller in size in did not have as big of a foot print as the two prior systems. Fluence up to 100 j/cm2 and a repetition rate up to 1.5Hz versus the 1.0Hz of the previous systems. Adjustable pre and post DCD spray. The Candela GentleLase Mini is a very good laser! The Candela GentleYAG is also a good laser for hair removal on skin types 4-6 but I don’t believe it is as popular as the GentleLase series. Coherent Lightsheer ET           Coherent (Lumenis) introduced the Lightsheer in a number of configurations, ST, EP, ET, EC and SC. all but the XC featured a 9x9mm spot size the XC was the only Lightsheer that featured a 12x12mm spot size. Some systems were 40 J/cm2 systems and others were 60 j/cm2. All systems had a chill tip and touch screen monitor. Early systems only had a pulse width of 5-30ms. The next improvement offered 5-100ms which gave improvedtreatment results on skin types 1-4 and the latest improvement offered 400ms pulse duration which further improve treatment results on all skin types. The portability of the table top systems, diode reliability and treatment outcome made the Lightsheer a success. The Lightsheer ET and Lightsheer XC models are currently available through Lumenis. Cynosure Apogee Elite             Cynosure offered the Apogee 40 back in 1998. It was a single wave length 755nm Alexandrite system for hair removal. Spot sizes were 7mm/10mm/12.5mm The brochure stated an optional 16mm spot size and 70mm x 70mm scanner. Over the years Cynosure offered the Apogee 5500, Apogee 6200 and Apogee 9300. All were good lasers, but the Apogee really hit it’s stride when the Apogee Elite was introduced. A combination of Cynosures Alexandrite 755nm, Apogee and Nd:YAG technology from the Acclaim. Now with one system all skin types could be treated. Most systems when sold were bundled with a Zimmer chiller and this packageto this day is still in demand. Cutera XEO               Cutera offered it’s Nd;YAG technology back when the where known as Altus. The CoolGlide, CoolGlide Excel and Cool Glide Vantage all were Nd: YAG systems. At the time Altus may have been the first company to get FDA clearance for hair removal treatment on all skin types. The CoolGlide had fluence up to 100 j/cm2, 10mm spot size and a pules width of 10-100 msec. The CoolGlide Excel was the next step up. The fluence was now up to 300 j/cm2, 3mm/5mm/7mm spot sizes and a pulses width of 1-300 msec. next was the CoolGlide Vantage. This system allowed the user to offer the Laser Genesis treatment (skin rejuvenation) to their patients in addition to hair removal. Altus now called Cutera introduces the redesigned XEO platform with the proven Nd:YAG technology. In addition to the Nd:YAG the system could be configured with a wide array of other treatment heads from Skin tightening to non ablative fractional skin rejuvenation. Alma Soprano              Before the Soprano Alma offer the Sonata 810nm diode system. Not sure how well the Sonata sold but not much demand today. Next was the newly designed Soprano. An attractive floor standing model that offered a large 12 x 10mm spot size, a repetition rate up to 3 Hz and an  integrated chiller for the skin. Next was the Soprano XL. Not that the Soprano was a bad laser, but the XL offered an SHR mode that had a repetition rate up to 10Hz. Quite a bit quicker than the Soprano. The Soprano Line of lasers are fast and reliable If I were to make a choice between which laser to purchase for skin types 1-3 it would be a toss up between the Candela GentleLase Mini or the Coherent Lightsheer ET. If I were to make a choice between which laser to purchase for skin types 1-6 it would be a toss up between the Cutera XEO and Cynosure Apogee Elite.
