In a newspaper story from Cambridge (UK), reporter Lisa Millard recommends five cellulite removal creams-none of which we have previously reviewed. So, we decided to put them to the test.

1. $40.29, at department stores and on line at Amazon.com. Formulated with eight plant extracts to target early and stubborn cellulite, this cream will smooth, firm and refine skin. According to test results, Clarins claim 92% of women reported their cellulite was less visible after using Body Lift for four weeks.

Does it work?

Well, it contains celosia cristata, which is an antioxidant. That helps to replenish your skin and refurbish and replace dead or dying cells. That certainly gives your skin a healthier appearance. They say it prevents future incidents through a blend of “blue button flower, baccharis and celosia cristata and aquatic mint,” which are “NEW (which explains why I can’t find out much about them) body-refining plant extracts that target…fatty tissue. Also, their claim that caffeine in extracts of scabious, geranium and cang zhu helps to minimize even the most persistent cellulite seems to be supported by research.

It causes a hot all over tingly feeling that makes you feel like something is happening. It seems to have tightened the skin somewhat. Instructions for application include their own self-massage method that incorporates holding certain Pilates-like positions for three counts as you apply the product, which is sort of ingenious, because it makes you exercise (a very small amount) as you go. I’m sure that helped some.

$49.10, also at Amazon.com and Beauty.com. Murad is attracting increasing attention for its results-driven skincare formulas. This serum contains active ingredients that reduce the appearance of dimples and stretch marks so skin looks firmer.

Dr Howard Murad is a highly respected dermatologist based in California. Murad is the top-selling ‘Dr’ line in Sephora stores in the USA.

Does it work?

It is very lightly textured, absorbs easily and there is absolutely no sticky feeling after applying. This is supposed to ‘refine uneven skin texture and improve skin firmness and elasticity’ and I do think it has done that. The skin is definitely firmer. It has certainly improved the ‘look’ of it.

If you have problem cellulite (that’s why you’re here, right?), this may be what you’re looking for.

$20.00, at Mary Kay.com and Amazon.com. The gel-cream formula blends the ingredients glycolic acid, caffeine and argan oil plus botanical and marine extracts to wage beauty war against stubborn cellulite. Combine with the Cellulite Massager to encourage circulation and smooth the appearance of lumps and bumps.

Mary Kays TimeWise Cellu-Shape Contouring System features two clinically tested formulations. The Daytime Body Moisturizer is designed to stimulate cellular activity, increase hydration and begin the firming and toning process. TimeWiseCellu-Shape Nighttime Body Gel is formulated to complete the firming process and strengthen the skin’s support system to minimize the visible signs of cellulite. The products’ claims of less visible cellulite and lose of up to ½ inch on each thigh are supported by a dermatologist’s review of a 12-week study at an independent laboratory(their claim).

Does it work?

Well they don’t tell what the ingredients are, so we can’t analyze them. We did see results, though.

I am very impressed with this product. So far I’ve been using it for two weeks and already I can see the back of my thighs getting smoother and firmer looking. As with most of these product this is an ongoing process. If you stop using, any results will soon disappear.

$41.09, at department stores Ulta, Sephora and at Amazon.com. Contains a combination of sea buckthorn and sea fennel extracts, lemon and juniper. This body oil can be applied to thighs, derriere and abdomen and works best after a shower or bath when the skin is still warm.

Does it work?

This product seems to work with CONTINUED use. They recommend you use the Elemis Body Brush(available where Elimis products are sold). Brush before showering and use the concentrate after showering. Used everyday, within a couple of weeks we saw a definite reduction in cellulite, and this is coming from someone with a good bit of cellulite. Smells lovely too.

$285.32,(WOW, now available for $168.87) at you guessed it, Amazon.com. Launched last year, this blend of plant-based active ingredients and essential oils works to reduce the appearance of orange peel skin. Cellulinov is an intensive anti-cellulite* body care, which claims to target the look of cellulite thanks to an exceptional synergy of plant-based active ingredients and essential oils.  Some reviewers rave about this product and, if it works, it may be worth every penny.(Obviously pretty pricey).

Does it work?

This product contains all the ingredients proven to work in other products: caffeine, cedrol,ginkgo biloba leaf extract, soy, shea butter, algaes, seeds and oils. They don’t disclose in what quantities so it’s hard to analyze.

With the first application, the skin seemed moisturized, softer, and smoother. After 4 week’s use, dimples seemed reduced, orange-peel skin seemed smoothed, the appearance of cellulite seemed to be visibly reduced.

While we did see positive results, we’re not convinced they were so much better as to warrant the price. We mentioned the ingredients are available in some form in other products. It’s your call.

We noticed that the best products include caffeine and Retinol-especially Retinol, the more the better.
